Florida’s Best Inland Motorcycle Escape

If you’ve only ridden Florida along the coast, you’re missing half the story.

Some of the best motorcycle riding in the state isn’t beachside — it’s inland, where cattle outnumber condos and the horizon stretches wide under an endless sky.

That’s where Route 60 comes in.

Running east to west across Central Florida, Route 60 cuts through ranchland, wetlands, and wide-open country. Between Lake Wales and Yeehaw Junction especially, traffic thins out and development disappears. It’s quiet. It’s scenic. It feels like the Florida most people never see.

And it’s gaining recognition.

🛣 Route 60 – Florida’s Emerging Scenic Corridor

State Road 60 has been formally proposed for designation under the Florida Scenic Highways Program — recognition given to roadways that preserve scenic views, cultural heritage, and historic significance.

Local leaders across Polk County and the region have been actively working toward this designation, highlighting the corridor’s ranchland vistas, historic landmarks, and authentic rural character.

As this effort moves forward, riders are increasingly referring to it as Historic Route 60 — a fitting name for one of Florida’s most memorable inland rides.

And no matter which direction you ride it, the road leads to something special.

Two Ways to Ride Route 60 to Camp Mack

One of the best parts about this ride is that it works beautifully from either direction.

🟢 Coming from the East Coast (Vero Beach / Melbourne)

Start near the Atlantic and head west on Route 60.

As coastal traffic fades behind you, the road opens into long stretches of rural Florida. Big sky. Open pavement. Real cattle country.

Stop 1 – Westgate River Ranch

A true inland Florida landmark with western atmosphere, rodeo energy, and wide-open ranch views.

Continue west toward Lake Wales.

Stop 2 – Bok Tower Gardens

Climb into the Lake Wales Ridge for rare Florida elevation changes and sweeping scenic views. It’s the perfect photo stop before heading north toward the river basin.

From there, the ride becomes quieter, more shaded, and more Old Florida.

And then you reach what feels like the end of the road. See below Stop 3, the End of the Road: Two Incredible Final Stops.

🔵 Coming from I-4 or Central Florida

If you’re starting near Orlando, Tampa, or anywhere along the I-4 corridor, begin near Lake Wales.

Stop 1 – Bok Tower Gardens

Start with the Ridge and its rolling hills.

Stop 2 – Westgate River Ranch

Ride east through open cattle country and stretch your legs at one of Florida’s most unique inland destinations.

Then turn north toward the Kissimmee River Basin.

The farther you go, the more it feels like stepping back in time.

Stop 3, The End of the Road: Two Incredible Final Stops

At the northern edge of this ride sit two incredible destinations side by side — where pavement meets prairie and river.

🏍 Camp Mack, an Old Florida Lodge, Marina & RV Resort

Pull in. Park the bikes. Slow down.

Cold drinks at the Freshwater Tavern or at the Riverfront patio by the store.

Live music on the Stage on select weekends.

Boats drifting in at sunset.

Lodge rooms and RV sites if you decide to stay.

Camp Mack isn’t just a stop — it’s the destination.

Riders can also explore the Camp Mack Heritage Trail, a self-guided walk highlighting the region’s fishing camps, cattle heritage, steamboat history, and the early days of the Kissimmee River Valley. It connects the road you just rode to the history that shaped it.

This isn’t manufactured nostalgia.

It’s real Florida — on the riverbank.

🌿 Lake Kissimmee State Park

Right next door, Lake Kissimmee State Park offers miles of prairie trails, oak hammocks, and shoreline views.

Stretch your legs. Walk toward the lake. Take in the same landscape early settlers and cattlemen once crossed.

Between Camp Mack and Lake Kissimmee State Park, you truly feel like you’ve reached the edge of civilization — in the best possible way.

Why Route 60 + The River Basin Works

Motorcycle riders aren’t just chasing miles.

They’re looking for:

• Scenic stretches

• Authentic destinations

• Places that feel earned

Route 60 delivers the road.

River Ranch and Bok Tower deliver the experience.

Camp Mack and Lake Kissimmee State Park deliver the ending.

Whether you’re riding west from the Atlantic or east from I-4, the final stretch into the Kissimmee River Basin feels different.

And when you pull into Camp Mack at sunset, you’ll know you found something most Florida travelers never see.
